Accidental payout detected
A cryptocurrency company in South Korea mistakenly distributed bitcoin valued at around $40 billion, according to a report by the BBC. The erroneous transfer was identified soon after it occurred.
The incident involved bitcoin being sent out to customers in amounts that were not intended as part of normal operations.
Company moves to reverse transfers
After recognising the mistake, the firm took swift steps to limit the impact and recover the assets. The BBC reported that the company was able to retrieve virtually all of the missing tokens from customers.
The recovery indicates that the bulk of the incorrectly transferred bitcoin was returned following the company’s actions to reverse the unintended payout.
Outcome
While the distribution amount was extremely large, the quick discovery of the error and the near-complete recovery helped contain losses.
