Arrest linked to alleged demand for bribe
Kenya’s Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, or EACC, has arrested a former judge as part of an investigation into an alleged Sh10.4 million bribery scheme.
According to the EACC, the probe centres on claims that suspects demanded money with the promise that they could influence the outcome of a court case.
The agency said the alleged bribe demand was tied directly to attempts to sway the result of the matter before the court. The EACC did not provide further details in its public statement on what case was involved or when the alleged demand was made.
What the EACC has alleged
The EACC said it is investigating allegations that the suspects sought Sh10.4 million. The commission described the alleged demand as an effort to affect the direction and final decision of a legal dispute.
The arrest of the former judge is part of ongoing steps by the commission in the wider inquiry. The EACC has not named other suspects in the brief information released.
No additional information was provided about whether the former judge has been charged in court, or whether investigators are seeking further arrests.
Investigation continues
The EACC is Kenya’s main anti-corruption body responsible for investigating and recommending prosecution of corruption-related offences. In this case, it said the investigation is focused on the alleged solicitation of money intended to interfere with the justice process.
Authorities have not released details on the evidence being examined or the next procedural steps. The commission has not disclosed if any funds were paid, or if the alleged demand was reported before any transaction took place.
The case remains under investigation, with the EACC expected to continue its inquiries into the alleged bribery demand connected to influence over a court outcome.
