India gets its first centre for Adaptive Deep Brain Stimulation

KIMS Hospitals has introduced Adaptive Deep Brain Stimulation, also known as aDBS, becoming the first centre in India to offer this technology for patients living with Parkinson’s disease. The development marks a new step in neurotechnology-based treatment in the country, according to details shared in a report by The Indian Practitioner.

Deep Brain Stimulation is a well established therapy used in certain neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s disease. It involves delivering electrical stimulation to targeted areas in the brain to help manage symptoms. The new system launched at KIMS Hospitals is described as “adaptive”, meaning it is designed to adjust therapy based on sensed signals, rather than delivering a fixed pattern of stimulation at all times.

What makes aDBS different

The aDBS system introduced by KIMS is described as sensing enabled and closed loop. In practical terms, this refers to a setup that can monitor relevant signals and use that information to guide how stimulation is delivered. Closed loop approaches are aimed at tailoring therapy more closely to a patient’s current needs, using feedback rather than relying only on pre set programming.

Parkinson’s disease can present with symptoms that vary across the day and change over time. Technologies that can respond to changes are being developed globally to make treatment more precise. KIMS Hospitals said its adoption of aDBS is a major advancement in neurotechnology for Parkinson’s patients in India.

Focus on Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement and can also involve non motor symptoms. Treatment commonly includes medications, and in some cases surgical options such as Deep Brain Stimulation are considered based on clinical evaluation.

With the addition of adaptive capabilities, the aDBS approach represents an evolution of DBS systems. The report describes it as a significant milestone for patients who may be eligible for this form of care.

Where it is available

KIMS Hospitals has positioned itself as the first centre in India to introduce aDBS. The announcement places the hospital group at the forefront of offering sensing based, closed loop DBS technology in the Indian healthcare setting.
