January 2026 shows strong growth for electric two wheelers

India’s electric two wheeler market started 2026 on a high note, with retail registrations rising sharply in January. The segment recorded 1,22,812 units in retail sales during the month, indicating continued traction for battery powered scooters and motorcycles across key urban and semi urban markets.

The January performance translates into a 24.77% year on year rise compared with January 2025, when 98,427 units were sold at retail. The increase highlights a stronger month for the category in comparison to the same period last year, based on the latest retail sales data.

More buyers, higher retail volumes

Retail sales figures represent vehicles that are sold and registered, offering a clearer picture of consumer demand than factory dispatches alone. With registrations crossing 1.22 lakh units, the month reflects wider adoption and sustained interest in electric mobility in the two wheeler space.

The data also signals that the market’s growth is not limited to a single player. A range of established manufacturers and newer brands are active in the segment, with products spanning multiple price points and use cases. Brands tracked in the segment include TVS, Bajaj, Ather, Hero, Ola, River and Bgauss.

Competitive field keeps the segment active

The presence of both legacy automakers and newer electric focused companies has made the electric two wheeler category one of the most closely watched areas of India’s auto market. Companies continue to compete on factors such as model availability, dealership reach and after sales support, alongside core vehicle features.

January’s year on year jump adds to the sense of momentum for electric two wheelers at retail. The figures indicate that the category is expanding compared with last year’s base, as more customers opt for electric options for daily commuting and short distance travel.
