European governments issue joint accusation
Five European countries have accused Russia of poisoning Alexei Navalny, the prominent opposition leader and long time critic of President Vladimir Putin. The allegation was made in a coordinated statement by the countries, according to reports cited by NDTV.
The group includes the United Kingdom, France and Germany. Two other European nations were also part of the joint action, taking the total to five.
Claim centres on ‘dart frog toxin’
In their accusation, the five countries said Navalny was killed using a poison described as “dart frog toxin”. The term refers to toxins associated with certain species of poison dart frogs, which are known for highly potent chemical compounds.
The countries said Russia was responsible for the poisoning, directly attributing blame to the Russian state.
Navalny was a leading face of Russia’s opposition
Alexei Navalny was widely known internationally as one of the most prominent figures in Russia’s opposition movement. He built a strong public profile as a vocal critic of the Kremlin and President Vladimir Putin.
The new accusation from European governments places the spotlight again on Navalny’s death and the circumstances surrounding it, with the countries framing the case as a state linked poisoning.
Russia blamed in coordinated diplomatic move
The joint nature of the statement signals a coordinated diplomatic step by the five countries. By acting together, the governments have presented a shared position on responsibility for Navalny’s death and the alleged method used.
NDTV reported that the countries used the word “poisoning” in describing what they say happened to Navalny, and they specifically pointed to Russia as being to blame.
